Torah Academy Presents a Chinese Auction
On Sunday, December 14th, Torah Academy will present its annual Chinese Auction. The event includes a sumptuous dessert buffet, performances by the Torah Academy Boys Choir, and over seventy raffle prizes. “This is a gala event, open to the entire community; anybody can come and win,” notes Carol Ledewitz, who serves on the Auction Committee. “The bigger prizes include vacations abroad, computers and other electronics, jewelry, big shopping sprees, and lots of other goodies.”
Rabbi Dovid Winkler, Executive Director of Torah Academy, explains, “A Chinese Auction isn’t really an auction but a large collection of raffles. All the prizes are on display, with a box next to each. People buy raffle tickets and put them into whichever boxes they want. The chances of winning each prize depend on how many people try for that prize. Then we draw a winning ticket from each box and give all the prizes away.” Ms. Ledewitz is quick to add, “But you don’t have to be there to win. Tickets can be ordered and placed in advance.”
According to Rabbi Hillel Mandel, Dean of Torah Academy, the Chinese Auction is one of the school’s two major annual fund-raisers, without which the school could not fulfill its mission. “Torah Academy is an orthodox Jewish day school, dedicated to the education and character development of boys and girls from pre-school through eighth grade. We serve a highly idealistic and accomplished parent body that expects excellence in both sacred learning and secular academic studies.” Founded in 1982, the school now has two locations, one in Brookline and one in Brighton. “Outstanding teachers imbue students with a love of Torah and divine service, a loving kindness for all people, and an appreciation and respect for the world around us.”
The Torah Academy Chinese Auction will take place at Young Israel of Brookline. Doors open for viewing prizes and enjoying desserts at 6:30pm, and the program begins at 8:00.
